Comprehensive guide for remote professionals applying for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa from Saudi Arabia, detailing KSA document legalisation, income requirements, and UGE compliance.

01 / Overview

Can you apply from Saudi Arabia?

Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa, formally the international teleworker route, allows eligible non-EU nationals to live in Spain while performing qualifying remote work for businesses based outside Spain.

You do not have to be a Saudi citizen to explore this route. A foreign national legally residing in Saudi Arabia may also qualify, provided they meet the relevant immigration and consular requirements. Eligibility depends on the actual employment or professional relationship, how the work is performed, financial evidence and the correct filing procedure.

There are two main application routes. An eligible person outside Spain may seek the international telework visa through the competent Spanish consular office. Someone already in Spain with regular lawful immigration status may apply electronically for an international telework residence authorisation through UGE.

The consular visa is ordinarily valid for up to one year. The initial residence authorisation can run for up to three years, depending on the qualifying work period. Neither outcome should be described as guaranteed.

02 / Requirements

Four eligibility checks for applicants based in Saudi Arabia

  • 01Genuine remote work and an established relationship. Your essential duties must be capable of being performed remotely using information and telecommunications systems. The foreign employer or client relationship must exist for at least the three months immediately before filing, and the foreign company must demonstrate at least one year of real activity. A contract calling the job “remote” does not, on its own, prove that all essential duties can be performed from Spain.
  • 02Education or professional experience. Applicants need a qualifying higher-education, professional-training or business-school credential, or at least three years of relevant professional experience. Where experience is used instead of a qualifying educational credential, UGE’s current checklist expects substantive supporting records. A contract alone should not be assumed sufficient.
  • 03Employee, freelancer or company owner. These arrangements are not interchangeable. For employees, a Saudi or other foreign employer generally needs to address Spanish Social Security registration and contributions when the employee works from Spain. Saudi Arabia does not have a bilateral Social Security agreement with Spain permitting this route to rely on an equivalent foreign coverage certificate. For independent professionals, Spanish self-employment registration is an immediate post-approval compliance requirement. Current UGE case practice also makes pre-filing registration history in the country of origin or provenance important. Applicants working through companies they own or control require a more detailed review of ownership, genuine commercial operations and company evidence. Business ownership does not automatically make someone ineligible.
  • 04Criminal records and background requirements. For an in-Spain UGE application, the ordinary evidence includes criminal-record certificates covering countries of residence in the previous two years, subject to applicable official exceptions, together with the required declaration addressing the previous five years. The issuing country, the type of certificate and its accepted freshness must be checked before ordering documents.
03 / Evidence

How much income and financial proof do you need?

For 2026 UGE residence applications, the main-applicant financial threshold is €2,849 gross per month, calculated using 200% of Spain’s annual minimum wage divided into 12 monthly periods.

The 2026 reference additions are €1,068.38 monthly for the first dependant and €356.13 monthly for each additional dependant.

These are 2026 figures. Applicants planning a 2027 application must recheck the thresholds in force when they file. The competent consular office’s current financial-document instructions should also be reviewed for visa applications.

Financial Evidence

What does UGE expect to see?

Under UGE’s current published checklist, applicants should provide payslips or invoices covering the three months immediately before filing, supported by an official bank certificate in the applicant’s name verifying the matching payments.

  • Payslips or invoices covering the three months immediately before filing.
  • A bank certificate in the applicant’s name covering that period, authenticated as required.
  • Clearly identifiable salary or invoice payments matching the supporting work documents.
  • Where relevant, additional liquid-funds evidence sufficient to cover any documented shortfall throughout the requested authorisation period.

Simply showing a bank balance or downloading a statement without matching the underlying work income may not satisfy the evidence review.

An applicant working through a Saudi company should also prepare the corporate records needed to establish that the business is real and has operated for the required period. The precise package depends on whether the applicant is employed by the company, works for it as an independent professional or owns it.

04 / Saudi Documents

Saudi Arabia uses the Hague Apostille

Saudi Arabia has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since December 7, 2022.

This means that covered Saudi-issued public documents intended for Spanish authorities generally follow the Apostille route rather than the old diplomatic-legalisation chain.

For example, a Saudi-issued public certificate may need an Apostille issued by the competent Saudi authority. With a valid Apostille, separate legalisation by the Spanish Embassy is generally unnecessary.

The correct route depends on the country that issued the document, not the applicant’s nationality or where they currently live. Someone residing in Riyadh who needs a certificate issued by a different country must follow that issuing country’s authentication rules.

Private documents are different. Employer letters, ordinary contracts, invoices and bank statements do not automatically require an Apostille or notarisation. If official certification is specifically needed, determine the proper process for that particular document.

Apostilles authenticate the relevant public signature, capacity or seal. They do not establish that the contents are true or that an underlying certificate is still considered sufficiently recent.

05 / Filing and Next Steps

Translation, application route and preparation

Foreign public documents submitted to Spanish authorities generally need an accepted official Spanish translation when they are not already in Spanish. This should cover relevant seals, authentication marks and Apostilles.

For electronic UGE submissions, current operational practice is to retain the original PDF produced and digitally signed by the authorised sworn translator. Reprocessing or merging a signed PDF can compromise signature verification.

Before choosing a filing date, confirm which route you will use:

  • Consular visa from Saudi Arabia: Check the current jurisdiction and submission instructions of the Spanish Embassy’s visa section. Legal residence in the consular district, the required documents and applicable appointment procedures matter.
  • UGE residence application inside Spain: The applicant must be regularly and lawfully in Spain on the filing date. Entry circumstances and the real purpose of travel can matter; possessing a Schengen visa does not eliminate those questions.

The most useful preparation is not collecting every possible certificate immediately. It is identifying the correct professional route, checking that the financial and work history already supports the case, and then ordering foreign public documents according to their actual processing times and freshness requirements.
